Alf raced motorcycles from a young age, built and raced midget cars and took over the promotion of Rowley Park in 1951. He had a keen sense of entrepreneurship which he applied to marketing the Speedway, and invited world class drivers and personalities to appear on race nights. He also travelled to overseas Speedways to observe different operations, gather new ideas and recruit drivers.
